La Casa - Continental fare in Bangalore

   Sunday afternoons are usually the normal time when all of us feel lazy to cook at home (we are no exception) and so today found us heading out in search of another restaurant to satisfy our cravings. Against all my inner voices, wildly protesting, I drove in the same direction that I do everyday to work, to a restaurant called La Casa. Now this restaurant has multiple outlets, the most famous being in Jayanagar but this one has a better ambience, being a old bungalow converted into a spacious restaurant with hanging gardens. We went to the one on Jail Road, near Sarjapura, the address being Amruta Engg. College road, Kasavanhalli, Bangalore - 560035. You can reach them on +91-80- 64535930.

The fare out here is claimed to be simple but has food from all major cuisines worldwide and then some unusual ones like Peruvian, Korean, Bhutanese :-) The way I look at it, its decent continental fare to be had as you have a few drinks - yes, they do have a well-stocked bar. Having sat down, we quickly ordered the starters. We were a group of four and 3 of them being vegetarians, making me a rare minority species. First up were the classic French fries, Chilly cheese toast and Mexican Bisque veg. soup.


The fries are good - thick, crisp and not too much oil on them and the mayo dip provided is a perfect foil. Chilly cheese toast passes muster - its just plain bread toasted in oven with string cheese on top and chopped green chillies. No great shakes considering you are paying 200 Rs. per plate. The soup was really good - a thick creamy tomato base with a salty touch and lotsa veggies boiled in it.
These were polished off in minutes while we placed the order for the main course - Indonesian Mee Goreng (chicken noodles) and Russell Market vegetable steak. Orders usually take their time here, at least a 20 min wait but the place is nice and cozy that you don't mind the relaxing wait. A word of caution... the portions are huge and if you fill your stomach with starters, better start reaching for the doggy bag early on.

First up, the Mee Goreng... its a spicy noodles preparation, very greasy with a well done egg on top. The chicken was dry and shredded in the noodles while the chicken on skewers were a little too big in size and harder than what I would have expected. Presentation is pretty good and it makes an appetizing picture. The dish is served with crisp rice wafers and kimchi salad. Overall, decent fare and quality. Same goes for the vegetable steak. The creamy sauce was a little too much and masked the taste of the steak completely while the veggies / fries were soggy due to prolonged exposure to the steak. Taste wise, it was ok and decent fare. As I said before, great place to drink.. have nice starters and huge volume of food at decent quality and price.

Quickly polishing it off (was a revelation that we were really starving:-) we skipped the dessert since we were just too full but have had the chocolate mousse on earlier occasions and its good. All the above came to around 1300 Rs. for the four of us. Not too shabby but not inexpensive either. All in all, you are in the mood for a few drinks, a relaxing atmosphere to sit and chat with friends with a wide range of decent continental fare, head to La Casa. You won't be disappointed...!!!
Ramadan Feast - on streets of Bangalore

 After a long, unintentional break, here's back to writing and salivating about food. Not that I took a break from that - intentional or otherwise. The holy month of Ramadan is always accompanied by the brilliant feasting options after a long day's fasting. In the small by-lanes of Bengaluru, await innumerable stalls that make delicious food, hot and unbelievably tasty. It was Friday evening, and a bunch of us decided to head to Mosque Road, Frazer town. Guided impeccably by a localite (thanks Praveen) we managed to beat traffic and land up there bang on time for the feast to begin.
Lights on every corner, bright burning fires, huge vessels cooking meat and of course the wafting aroma of delectable food assaulted us. We stopped by the first shop we see on entering the road. Quickly we end up ordering Haleem, Chicken rolls, plates of mutton and beef and keema samosas. The chicken rolls were cold but had flavor. Mutton and Beef were cooked to perfection with the juices dripping off them and extravagantly coated in a multitude of spices. The keema samosa were a let-down since they did not have too much keema in them and were a little plain.


Apologies for the bad photos but I was busy licking my fingers clean and juggling multiple plates of food to bother about perfection in photo taking :-)
Let me give you some of the best items on menu there - beef kebabs, mutton liver and rolls.
And yeah.. there are dessert options and we dug into those too happily. It ranges from phirni, fruit pudding, caramel custard, gajar ka halwa to an exotic souffle made of tender coconut shavings. The pudding and the coconut souffle were exceptional while the rest were no mean slouches either.
All in all.. an amazing experience .. brilliant food and decent prices and a fantastic experience to savor. Just make sure you pick a dry day with no rains :-) then let loose and indulge to your heart's content.
